NYTimes, 2010.11.29

Two of China’s main export manufacturing areas are suffering from an acute shortage of migrant workers, giving laborers more leverage over wages and curtailing the expansion plans of some companies, according to a report published Monday in China Daily, an official English-language newspaper.

The shortfall of workers is especially severe in the service and manufacturing industries. The regions most affected are the Pearl River Delta, which is in the southern boom province of Guangdong, and in the Yangtze River Delta, near Shanghai. The Pearl River Delta could be short by as many as 900,000 workers, China Daily reported, citing a recent survey by the human resources department of Guangdong.

The Local, 2010.11.29

Sweden's economy easily beat expectations to post record growth in the third quarter, driven by strong domestic demand, as the government warned against over-confidence.

Sweden, which emerged from recession in the second quarter of 2009 and saw growth quickly pick up in the first quarter of 2010, now has one of Europe's strongest growth rates.

Like Reinfeldt, Finance Minister Anders Borg, who has been largely credited with the Scandinavian country's dramatic turn-around, also cautioned Monday against allowing the strong growth figures to lead to "hubris."

"We must remember that when countries explode, as we have seen in Iceland and Ireland, this has usually been preceded by extreme confidence. Things have looked good and one has been afflicted by hubris. But we will not let that happen to us," he told reporters in Stockholm.

"It is extremely important that we keep our public finances in order," he added.

France24, 2010.11.29

Some 15,000 delegates gather at the Mexican resort of Cancun on Monday for an annual UN conference on climate change. Scientists say emissions should be cut 25-40 percent below 1990 levels by 2020 to prevent a dangerous rise in global temperatures.

The disruption may already have begun.

Researchers point to this summer’s historic heat wave in Russia and nationwide floods in Pakistan as portents of things to come. In the Arctic Ocean, the summer melt of the ice cap has reached unprecedented proportions in recent years, and studies suggest the summer ocean may be ice-free as early as this decade.

Here in Mexico, research points to a drying out and shrinking of farm output in some regions, which might lead to a greater exodus of Mexican migrants to the U.S.

P 7437 ギリシャとの別れ

It's not an easy time to leave Greece. Firstly, as a journalist because "the story" has not yet run its course.

The economic pain is bound to deepen over the coming months, and it's difficult to predict whether Greece will pull through, or whether it will eventually have to default on its enormous debts, with uncertain consequences for Europe and beyond in this febrile economic climate.

And, secondly, as a friend of Greece, it's a bad time to say goodbye, for the simple reason that the country is now an unhappy place.

Old people are anxious, young people want out. There's a widespread perception that things are going to get worse. I hope that perception is wrong, and I can come back in happier times.
