P 4809 The Critical Path to Cures for Alzheimer's & Parkinson's

Jane Erikson

Thirty-five million people in the world today are afflicted with Alzheimer’s disease – among them, 5.3 million Americans – and their numbers are expected to double over the next 20 years.

That grim prediction from the 2009 World Alzheimer’s Report is made all the more disturbing by painfully slow progress in developing new drugs to treat Alzheimer’s. Nine drugs developed in recent years have demonstrated little or no effectiveness when tested in patients. And the four drugs now on the market have been able to slow memory loss for only a short while.

But there is a glimmer of hope – probably more than a glimmer. In early 2010, Tucson’s Critical Path Institute plans to go to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration with new research data that could speed up development of Alzheimer’s drugs – and perhaps lead to a cure, or even prevent, this dreaded, devastating disease.

In addition to its attack on Alzheimer’s, the world’s most common neurodegenerative disease, C-Path is going after the second most common, Parkinson’s disease. While it affects fewer people – an estimated 1 million Americans, and 4.1 million worldwide – Parkinson’s numbers also are expected to double by 2030.
