BANGKOK—The date for Thailand's next elections hasn't been set, but Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva's campaign showed signs of beginning Sunday as he announced a series of welfare spending projects aimed at bridging the country's gaping social divides.

Meanwhile, antigovernment Red Shirt protesters, so named for their choice of clothing, regrouped in Bangkok for the latest in a series of monthly protests. Around 20,000 people gathered in the city center to press for early polls and demand the release of Red Shirt leaders detained in the aftermath of last May's Bangkok street clashes between protesters and security forces that claimed 91 lives.

P 6906 Latin America and the Caribbean

world bank 2010.10.06

Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) cushioned the social impact of the 2008 global crisis thanks to its ability to inter-connect firmly with emerging markets in Asia which in turn boosted growth to 5-6 percent for 2010 -and at least 4 percent for 2011- while keeping in place the region’s social protection networks.

According to “Globalized, Resilient, Dynamic: The New Face of Latin America and the Caribbean” a report authored by the World Bank’s Chief Economist for LAC, Augusto de la Torre, the region showed a remarkable capacity to withstand the crisis’ impact which –the report argues- did not last very long in comparison with other regions, including developed countries, “due to the region’s sound macroeconomic, fiscal and financial policies.”

ADB

The MDGs were established in 2000, following the Millennium Summit in New York, where the world's governments committed themselves to a series of development targets to be achieved by 2015.

The Asia Pacific region has made good progress in reducing income poverty, education enrollment, gender equality, halting spread of TB and HIV, and access to clean water. However performance relating to education quality, and gender empowerment, child and maternal health, increasing forest cover, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and access to basic sanitation is weak and the MDG targets may not be reached if much more effort is not made.
