FROM January 1 expectant working mothers have become eligible for the Federal Government’s Paid Parental Leave Scheme.

Up until now new mothers were entitled to the Baby Bonus worth $5294. Now they are eligible for the Parental Leave allowance, almost double the Baby Bonus.

Finally, I hope I have engaged my younger colleagues in giving serious consideration to becoming rural medical practitioners – the last bastion of truly comprehensive medical care and where the most rewarding challenges are to be met.

Rural Australia will continue to need a strong voice in wider Australia – and young, committed medical practitioners need to be part of that fabric.

The website also provides comparisons to national public hospital performance statistics on waiting times for elective surgery and emergency department care, where data are available.

This website draws on data collected by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, provided by state and territory health departments and private hospitals. Australian and New Zealand Ministers responsible for Ageing met in Melbourne today to discuss and action a range of health and ageing issues affecting older Australians. Ministers reaffirmed the importance of co-operation around the interests of ageing Australians, including discussion around the implementation of national aged care reforms under the Australian Government's National Health and Hospital Network initiative. The meeting was chaired by Mr Murray Watt MP, Queensland Parliamentary Secretary for Healthy Living, and attended by the Federal Minister for Mental Health and Ageing Mark Butler along with members representing State and Territory Governments, the New Zealand Minister of Senior Citizens and the Australian Local Government Association.
